Masks from Africa

Gu mask

Guro people, Ivory Coast, Africa

19 inches, wood painted in red enamel

A fowl eating a worm or small snake is occasionally seen on Guro masks. The three welts on the forehead symbolize the female sex. Used for agricultural ceremonies and other public festivals. Modern masks like this utilize bright, store-bought enamel, and sometimes other manufactured materials. It is carved from heavy hard-wood and has seen a fair amount of use, which has contributed to a nice patina.

"Illustrated in the book, Masks from Around the World. A copy of the catalog included with pruchase.
