Yaka People, Congo 26 inches, wood, raffia cloth & fibers, rattan Hand-held masks like these are used by boys during the initiation and circumcision ceremonies of the Yaka. Similar but more elaborate masks are used by officiating elders. See page 78-9 of African Masks from the Barbier-Mulller Collection for a look at both. For a large mask it is fairly light because the helmet is fabricated of cloth over rattan. Though in excellent condition, it appears to be used. The custom-made stand will be included. $650
