African Kable mask
Tussian people, Burkina Fasso, Africa
22.5 inches, wood
The Kable is a rare mask from the small Tussian culture in south-western
Burkina Fasso. It is danced at funerals and other important occasions to
drive away the evil spirits. With its hollowed dome surmounted by a
standing water buffalo with bird between its curving horns, plus four
stacked zoomorphic creatures above the hindquarters, it is a classic
example. In good condition, crack at crown of dome, old crack at center
of buffalo, insect erosion and attempt at restoration on one side. Some
signs of use but no serious damage.
