Cacomistle head Chichicastenango, Guatemala 7 inches, painted wood This small carved head looks like a Central American cacomistle (jentinkia), related to the ringtail cat and the raccoon. Not really a mask, animal heads like this are attached to the top of "bastones", staffs carried in processions in highland Guatemala. They are used in connection with the dance of the voladores in Chichicastenango, where men swing out and down on ropes from a tall pole. Before the dance the dancers make a procession around town, setting off skyrockets at each corner. It’s in good condition. The solid ears look like they were carved from separate pieces of wood & glued on before painting. It comes from Tomas Ajpacaja, who lives in the Department of Quiche in a small aldea near Santa Cruz del Quiche but within the municipio of Chichicastenango. sold
