Gurulu Devil mask

Sri Lanka

21 inches, painted wood

Here is a full-size mask that is in 5 parts. Most are in 3 parts-- with the main face flanked by two ear panels. This one has an additional two tusks, and is very well carved and painted, making it an especially desirable piece. In excellent, almost new condition, it must be older because they don’t  work this carefully anymore.

Gurulu, the local equivalent of Garuda, the mythical bird on which the Hindu god Vishnu rode, is a common subject for Sri Lankan masks. In an Island famous for worshipping demons believed to be living in the wilderness, devil masks are in popular usage for a variety of practices.
