Altiplano of S. America 8.5 inches, ceramic material, paint, fiber, button Though this looks like a Bolivian carnival mask, it is probably from Southern Peru. Like the indigenous inhabitants of Bolivia, who speak mostly Aymara or Quechua, these people are part of the same Altiplano culture. The Altiplano is a remote inland area lying in the central Andes, occupying parts of Northern Chile and Argentina, Western Bolivia and Southern Peru. Cool and very dry, its height averages about 12,300 feet, slightly less than that of Tibet. It is famous for its fabulous masks and costumes. I’m guessing the character is Achachi, but it
could be a Moreno. The fiber mustache is removable. Please note the
unprofessional repair work on the forehead. It is strong, but would look
much better if carefully touched up.
