Masks from Bali and Java for the Topeng, Wayang Wong, and Calon Arang classic dance dramas.

Cakil mask

Dieng, East Java, Indonesia

8 inches, painted wood

The demon called Cakil ( fang ) is the main opponent of the hero Arjuna in the Topeng. Cakil, is also known as Danawa Djakil or Kepiting ( the crab ), but this last name has only recently come into use. The Topeng dance drama is also performed in Java, but rarely by professionals. Thus the masks are more primitive than those of Bali. This one is old and used. The two big fangs are nailed in place. This mask is illustrated in the book, "Masks from Around the World."
