Bamun/Bamileke Helmet mask

Central and Southern Grassfields, Cameroon, West Africa
painted wood

Q: It’s hollow and sits on top of the head. There’s a two inch square hole on the top that presumably held an additional carving. It seems to have some age.  Mike, 11-05-11, 234

A: I originally thought this was from the Ibo people, of Southern Nigeria. An expert on African art was kind enough to say it was really from the Bamun or Bamileke area of Cameroon. She goes on to say these are often covered with beads.
