Q: American Indian or Eskimo? The wood is old and light like cedar. Please help!  David, 586

A: I took a look at as many North American indigenous mask as I could. I was hoping I might find an old Iroquois mask that came close, but I didn’t find one. Rough, primitive masks with no color turn up all the time, probably from every continent except Antarctica and Australia. They can be quite appealing in appearance, but if there is no way to identify the culture, collectors will shy away from them. D

I would suggest that this mask is from Malawi and is a death mask – the mouth being open. In my opinion is an excellent mask because the carving has been hand made rather than by machinery. Can say more is you are interested.
