Q: Here are some photos of a “Langnase” carnival mask from Elzach, Germany. This one is not old, but is made for use. Aaron, 1064
A: I just posted a mask from Aaron (actually two from Lombok) a week ago, which means I’m breaking my own rules again. But his acquisitions are always worth sharing with others.
This one is great. It looks like it might be a Scaramouch or a Plague Doctor from the famous carnival of Venice, Italy. But instead, it’s from a much different culture in southwest Germany.

Nice! First I thought that it was a mask from the Rhön area in northern South Germany – one of the most northern mask-wearing areas in South Germany. There, they use to have a distinguished white, simple mask with red cheeks, black moustache and eyes like those on Aaron’s mask (and the hair details use to be carved, not painted). However, I have never seen a long nose in the Rhön area. So, the Elzach Langnase, I did not know until now. Thanks for sharing!

…and yes, I forgot, Elzach is not in Bavaria, it is Baden-Württemberg, the neighbouring province to the west of Bavaria. Baden-Württemberg lies also in South Germany, and therefore, they also have manifold “Alemannic” wooden-mask cultures, like all over the area lying just north of the Alps.
