Join us as we delve into the fascinating narrative behind this remarkable mask, exploring its origins, the meticulous craftsmanship of Guatemalan artisans, and the serendipitous journey that led it to our community. Through the lens of personal experience and cultural exploration, we invite you to uncover the secrets and stories embedded in this beautiful piece of art.

“My parents bought this mask when we were in Chichicastenango, Guatemala, probably in 1973, when I was 6 or 7. I think we have shots of the mask-maker and his workshop. Afterwards, a friend of us took us into the hills behind his house to a site of a recent ritual, with chicken feathers scattered around an alter and candles. As you can see, there is a name and location written on the back by the artist. It’s about 8.5 inches top to chin, and 6 inches ear to ear. It has glass eyes made of concave pieces of painted glass, roughly clipped around the edges and attached with a brown, now hard and brittle, resin. The name reads Miguel something, perhaps Jguver…I’m sure I’m not deciphering the cursive correctly. It’s on such a rough surface”

Glass eyes are a distinctive feature of traditional Guatemalan masks, often used to enhance their appearance and expressiveness. This adds a striking realism, allowing the masks to convey emotions and character more vividly. This technique showcases the skill and artistry of Guatemalan mask makers, who blend natural materials with intricate design to create pieces that are both visually captivating and culturally significant.
