Q: I got this mask at a flea market about a year and a half ago and am very curious about it. It is wood with hammered metal overlaying it, with real animal hair. A: It’s a Kore mask from the Marka people of Mali, West Africa. If you select “Africa” and go all the way back to Dec 2, 2014, you can see another Marka mask and get a little more information. Yours is the same in basic design, but it is entirely covered with metal. Both are quite decorative and have that classic Marka/Bamana look.
