Traditional masquerade continues to evolve

African-Nigerian-Postman-aLook at this wonderful postman mask from Nigeria. The guy looks like an Indian immigrant, and his cap seems to have the USPS logo on it. Times are changing. Actually, traditional African art has been changing for a long time. Two great books to read: Africa Explores by Susan Vogel and Maske by Phyllis Galembo.

It is traditional in its style and purpose. However, the subject matter is contemporary. It is a nice example of how traditional masquerade continues to evolve in culture. After seeing thousands of reproductions of African tradition art ever month, it is a pleasure for me to see the real deal occasionally.
