A Mystery Mask

Q:  I am a collector of Roman and Greek archaeological finds. A few days ago for my birthday they gave me this mask. I just don’t know about masks and I don’t know what culture or era it can go back to.

It is about 6 cm long. Unfortunately, I can’t even understand what material it is made of. It could be lead.

A: My first thought about this mask is that it might be a Greek theatre mask, but it’s made of metal. Typically, Greek theatre masks are made of ceramic and have a mouth hole.  I reached out to Aaron the curator of The Mask Museum and he thought it might be European or possibly Middle Eastern. He also mentioned that it looked like a Greek theatre mask, but he had the same concerns that I did.

I’m not sure where this mask comes from, if anyone has any insights please leave a comment. Thanks!
