Q: I have recently owned some masks on an antique fair. I am not an expert so I am very curious if they are original, hand made, etc. Could you please tell me what their origin is? I am sending photos of one of the masks. I would be grateful for your help. A: This mask is from Sri Lanka, a small island nation with a rich tradition of masquerade.

Rare, old Indian mask
Q: I have had this huge mask for a while and always thought it was from South India (possible Kerala), but recently a friend told me it looks Nepalese to him? With the larger nose possibly a Garuda? I think it may be a form of Shiva as well. Also I am having a heard time dating it. It has for sure been worn and lots of wear and few layers of paint. Ant ideas? Josh, 705 A: You have a wonderful mask here. It is probably from somewhere in northeastern India.

Don’t be fooled by old looks
Q: We purchased this mask and have no idea about it. It is made of one piece of wood. The motif atop the mask is of a man riding a cat which has a man in it’s mouth. There appears to be an export wax stamp on it but we cannot make out the characters and there is a price tag of $890.00. Lizzy, 675 A: Masks like this have a nice antique feel and are excellent wall hangings.

Deformity masks heal the sick
Q: I found this at a thrift shop in Boca Raton. So it is likely completely out of context. They didn’t want much for it, so I bought it, but I can’t really figure out where it is from? It is very small, more of a decorative carving at 6″ X 4″. Rick, A: You found an exorcism mask from Sri Lanka.

Unusual carved wood bird
Q: Thanks again for doing that quick assessment for us here. I’m not sure what will happen with the masks, but your information is extremely helpful in deciding. I have another question if you wouldn’t mind. I now have one more mask. Is there anything you can tell me about this piece? I don’t intend to sell it. I just really liked it and am curious if I can learn anything about it. Lynn, 665 I’m not sure about this one.

A Magic Dragon from the Himalayans
Q: Here is the Bhutan dragon mask I bought a couple of years ago. It is about a foot long. The black strap you see in the photo I added and the mask sits more on top of your head then in front of it. I have seen this of other photos of Bhutanese mask wearers. Also you see through the mouth of the mask because is sits on your fore head and just in front of your eyes. It is an Asian style dragon that has the branched horns and thin white whiskers, but what is cool is the typical mustache that many Bhutanese men wear. Ray, 664 A: …

A piece of primitive Himalayan art
Q: Thanks so much for the feedback. This mask might be another wall hanging, but I wanted to send it to see if you can figure the origin. I was thinking North India or Tibet? And then again maybe Central America. I’m just awful at this! Thanks so much in advance, Christine. 651 A: I think you’re doing just fine. This is a tourist mask from Nepal which is right between North India and Tibet.

Beautiful mask from Bhutan
Q: I know almost nothing about the Yama – I won it at an auction for very little. Aaron, 649 A: Bhutan is able to support the art of fine mask-making, perhaps because it’s such a costly place to visit and the tourists have plenty of money to spend. This mask of Yama, Lord of the Underworld, is a beautiful example of what can still be purchased in that remote Himalayan country.

A smile from the Himalayas
Q: i bought this mask at a thrift shop in victoria bc. Thought it was westcoast carving, then looked online and it seems to fit with the monpa primitive theme. Saw a similar one that was nicknamed ‘joker’ on the zemanek site. Is it monpa and what sort of age would it be. It has a red wax seal or stamp in it Walter, 644 A: It is a primitive Himalayan mask.

Beautiful Buddha
Q: I’ve had this and another very similar mask for some 15yrs. They were found in a skip! 18″ tall 11″ wide and made I think of balsa, they are very light anyway and feel furry. I have seen Balinese masks similar but very rough in comparison. Where do you think they are from and what age? The faces were bright white but years of hanging in my Scottish cottage with smoky wood burner has given them a ‘mature patina’ Ha ha! Al, 641 A: This is a sculpture of the Buddha, not a mask.
